Abstract

Highways and motorways are major classes of roads which are used for connecting distant cities of Pakistan. Motorways are designed for fast moving vehicles with controlled access where as conventional highway means a roadway with at grade intersections and without control of access. The purpose of this paper is to differentiate the design considerations and to highlight the differences in the designs of these two types of roads. For this purpose, case study of Motorway M-4 and G.TRoad Expressway (from Shahdara to Kala Shah Kaku) has been conducted to extrapolate variations of their geometric and structural design. The results of this study may provide useful guidelines and may play an important role during construction of these roads.
