Abstract
Located on the banks of the Euphrates River in Iraq, the city of Kufah was first developed by ‘Umar (RA) in the 17th century. Although a war-torne, it is still considered amongst the major and important centres of the country. The city was initially established as a garrison to efficiently conduct the military operations and invasions in Iran. Due to its geographic location and pleasant climate a large number of sahahab, tabi’un and their succcessors migrated to the city of Kufah. The inward migration got acceleration in the period of caliph ‘Ali (RA) when he declared it as his capital. The migration of large number of scholars made Kufah a prominent learning Centre in the disciplines of Hadith and Fiqh. Both the caliphs paid special attention towards preservation and expansion of Islamic knowledge in this city. The present article presents some glimpses from the past in this regard.
