Abstract
Muwattaʾ of Imam Muhammad possesses a vital significance in the discipline of hadith texts (mutun al-hadith). We have sixteen scripts of this earliest work on hadith, one of which is ascribed to Imam Muhammad bin Hasan al-Shaybani. Along with his personal viewpoints, al-Shaybani has also recorded the opinions of his two great teachers, Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Malik. In this way the reader has the opportunity to understand the juristic approaches of both of them at the same time. Various scholars of hadith have written commentaries on this work, such as ‘Allamah Ibrahim Shahir Berizada, Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari and ‘Allamah ‘Abdul Hay Lakhnawi. The explanatory commentary written by ‘All┐mah ‘Abdul ╓ay is considered to be precise and comprehensive of all the rest. In this article, the short biographical sketch of ‘Allamah Lakhnawi is presented alongwith evaluation of his famous academic contribution: al-Ta’liq al-Mumajjad. Origins and sources of this work have also been pointed out briefly.
