Abstract

Tawassūl (Intercession/Mediation) means seeking nearness to Allah. The term Wasilah (Mediator) has been used twice in Qurān and translated as “a means that can be used for seeking nearness to Allah”. Tawassūl (Seeking nearness to Allah) and use of Wasilah is principally permissible by Qurānic verses: Sūrat al-Māidah [5:35] and Sūrat al-Isrā [7:57]. Numerous Ahadith has strengthened the use of Wasilah in worship and supplication. Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) guided his companions to seek Wasilah of him. Muslim Scholars and Theologists are in agreement that using Wasilah is acceptable, but they differed in the permissible kinds of Wasilah. According to the major stream Tawassūl with good deeds and supplication of righteous ones are permissible, however, there is a serious discussion about Tawassūl of Prophet (SAWW) and other pious muslins after their death. This article discussed in details the views of Muslims Scholars in dissension type of Tawassūl by demonstrating the approach and methodologies used by Imam Zahid al Khawthri; a prominent theologist of 20th century.
