Abstract
Imam Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (deceased 606 Hijri/ 1209 A.D) holds a distinctive position among the Islamic scholars who nurtured a new pattern of exegesis through his work Tafsīr Mafāṭīḥ al-ghayb, well known as Al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr. He was at the same time an exegete, jurist, principled, speaker, philosopher and an expert physician along with being an acknowledged specialist of logic. Therefore all these characteristics are found in his exegesis on large scale. One of the attributes of his exegesis is, taking benefit from the collection of Mu’tazila’s commentary in order to produce an amalgamation of imitation and observation. On one hand he repudiated their reprobative opinions with proofs and on the other hand, he was not ungenerous in appreciating their admirable opinions. So his exegesis is a masterpiece of traditionalism in the collection of Islamic literature. In this article, Methodology of Imam Razi in context to his attitude towards exegetical dictums of Mu’tazila has been shown with a purpose to understand and develop the Razi’s rational in the Present era of thoughts and contemplation. Though this article is written after a specific study of volume 6 of Tafseer e Kabir, nonetheless the same methodology has been promoted in the whole of his Tafseer.
