Abstract

Classification of the narrators of Hadith and the description of their status whether authentic or otherwise (‘ilm al-jarh wa l-ta’dil) is an appropriate Hadith science to preserve Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) from distortion, innovation, change or alteration. For doing so, it is necessary to strictly observe the rules of this science so that no narrator (rawi) is put in the danger of being labeled “unauthentic” without suffice justification. For this very reason muhaddithun (experts of hadith) have been very careful in passing the verdict of ‘unauthentic” on a particular narrator by devising rules and regulations to be strictly considered by the evaluator. It is therefore mandatory upon a student/researcher of Hadith to abide by these regulations, especially in cases where conflict of opinion of scholars of Hadith is found about the status of a rawi. The present article provides details on this specific issue.
