Abstract

Mawlana Husain ‘Ali (1867-1944 AD), born in the remote village of Wan Bhachran, Mianwali, Punjab- Pakistan was a prolific scholar of tafsir of his time. He got basic education from his father and local ‘ulama. Afterwords he travelled to India in quest of further knowledge of Islam and became student of the great Indian scholars of the time such as Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Mawlana Ahmad Hasan Kanpuri and Mawlana Mazhar Nanotavi. The last out of these three scholars had earned fame as an expert of Qur’anic exegesis due to his tireless efforts and outstanding contributions in the field. Mawlana Husain ‘Ali faithfully absorbed the light of Qur’anic knowledge transferred to him via his teacher and further contributed in the field. The present article studies the exegetical terminologies devised by Mawlana Husayn ‘Ali for thematic understanding of the Qur’an and present relevant examples for clarification. The predominat nature of these terminologies is thematic which can occassionaly be structural or formal.
