Abstract
Fiqh is one of the major sciences of Islam and it represents the legal dimension of Islam .It was originated in the time period of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).Not only prophet laid its foundations but also He trained his companions through different practices so they may be able to solve the problems faced by Muslim society in different spheres of life regarding legal affairs. Prophet guided about the different sources of Islamic Fiqh. It was established in the time of Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet are the material sources of Islamic Fiqh. Orientalists contributed a lot in the field of Islamic Fiqh. According to their view point which is believed by majority of their scholarship Sunnah is not the second source of Islamic Fiqh. They defined Sunnah in different way and do not linked it to Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). There are contradictory opinions in their writings about Sunnah, its origin, status and role, importance and significance and its preservation.in this article standpoint of the Orientalists about Sunnah as a source of Islamic Fiqh is being critically analyzed.
