Abstract

The Holy Qurʼān has been translated and interpreted by various Muslim scholars. Each interpretation has its own uniqueness. In the Sub-continent, many Muslim ‘Ulamās translated the Holy Qurʼān into Urdu language. Every translation and interpretation deflect predisposition of the translator. Maulānā Abū al-Kalām Āzād is one of the most prominent and outstanding mufassir among them. He wrote "Tarjamān-ul-Qurʼān". He is considered to be the most notable personalities of Muslim India. He has rendered valuable services to the Sub-Continent, Islām and Ummah in different fields and branches of learning. He created a revolution in the thinking of Muslim Ummah and changed their visions. He awakened the Muslims and created a spirit of actions and stimulated their hearts with real feelings of sacrifices as well as made them active in their practical life. Maulānā Āzād had a very comprehensive and broad conception before him. His translation and interpretation and supplementary notes which laid emphasis on the improvement and training of the individual, establishment of the proper family norms and just society and supplementing Islāmic values for the collective life of Muslim nation and also covered important questions in their minute details such as international message of brotherhood, establishment of universal human society and re-construction and development of humanity as a whole. Maulānā Āzād interpreted the Holy Qurʼān in its true spirit, the style and beauty of "Tarjamān-ul-Qurʼān" is a world of its own. It is a successful and unique feature of Urdu literature. He strictly avoided words to words meaning and used the simplest language to make understand the teachings of Qurʼān in a natural tone. He created the love of Qurʼānic education and depicted the Holy Qurʼān in such a fine way that he opened the new gates of the faith for the people.
