Abstract
Allama Abdul Aziz Parharwi (1206/1792-1239/1824) was a renowned scholar from the Indian subcontinent. He was proficient in secular and religious sciences of the day. The likes of him are hard to find both in the past and in the present. As regards Islamic sciences, he was well versed in hadith and Islamic jurisprudence and was multilingual. Moreover, like many Muslim savants of the past, his deep interest lay in the science of medicine. His masterpieces in this domain are titled al-Aksir, al-Zamurd, al-Anbar and alTaryaq. They speak volumes for the erudition of the scholar on drugs, medication and remedies. Especially the treatise, al-Taryaq, is Parharwi’s magus opus which offers a wealth of medical knowledge. However, it is misfortune that al-Taryaq, albeit it’s writing a couple of centuries back, has not been published as yet. It is high time scholars with knowledge of medicine-cumIslam brought out this book so that the students of medical science might benefit from it. The celebrated author has divided the work into two parts. The first part contains the preface as well as the benefits of the science of medicine and the characteristics of medical practitioners. Ethics pertinent to this field are also there which should serve as guiding principles for the present-day doctors. In the work, Parharwi focused on the study of diseases of eyes, ears and brains. The second part consists of fourteen chapters which enlightens on many more maladies. The writer cites philosophers and doctors as well as the sacred Scripture of the Muslims, Qur’an, Prophetic traditions and faithful academics. The book makes a compelling reading due to its usefulness. Hence, in the interests of medical profession, the manuscript of al-Taryaq should be turned into a book and made accessible to the public.
