Abstract

Media is considered as the effective tool of communication and it has some responsibilities to play in a democratic society. The objective of this study was to analyze and explore the practices of print media journalists of Multan. It also focuses on different kinds of influences that create impact on news making process. The major area of research revolves around the impact of media routines on construction of news stories. The study was theoretically linked with theories of influences on media content presented by Shoemaker and Reese. The population of the study was 566 print media journalists working in different national and local newspapers out of which 100 journalists were taken as a sample from daily Jang, Nawa-i-waqt, Express and Khabrain. Purposive sampling technique was used in the study because a specific type of material required from journalists according to the nature of research questionnaire. Survey method was used to collect the data from research respondents and interviews were too conducted from some mainstream journalists working in Multan. Results of the study revealed that majority of the journalists were of the view that media routines are the key elements that create impact on news construction. They did believe that media routines like gate keeping, deadlines, proximity, human interest, reliance on official sources and dependence of media organizations on other media outlets were the major influence on news making process.
