Abstract

The knowledge of Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (odd and complicated words of Ḥadith) is an important and difficult art in the science of Ḥadith. According to Muḥaddithīn, the unawareness of this art is considered as a major defect. Many books have been compiled on the subject of ‘Gharīb al-Ḥadīth’. Due to the tremendous significance of this art, the commentators of Ḥadīth put in their best efforts to elaborate the odd and difficult words of Ḥadīth in their commentaries. Maulānā Khalīl Aḥmad Saharanpurī has solved this issue of Gharīb al-Ḥadīth meticulously in his eminent commentary of Sunan Abi Daūd, Badhl al-Majhūd and elaborated the terms or words referring to Gharīb al-Ḥadīth. He has opted different methodologies for this purpose. His most comprehensive method is to elucidate the meaning of the words and then he quotes the sayings of the experts in the field of Gharīb alḤadīth and at the end he also gives his own opinion. However, in some places, he just depends on the viewpoints of the experts and does not comment.
